Metal Fabrication in Marietta

National Iron Works is a family-owned Marietta shop that builds custom ironwork in-house. Welds and installation carry a 5-year warranty (powder coating not covered; not transferable).

What Our Marietta Shop Fabricates

Metal fabrication covers the pieces that get built rather than bought: custom brackets and frames, structural steel, staircases, and handrails. This page breaks down what each one covers so you can tell which job you have. Give us a call and we’ll help you sort it out.

Most people who call us already know something’s wrong. The porch rail wiggles. The gate won’t latch. The stairs need something to hold onto. What they don’t know is what to call it, and that’s fine – that’s our job. National Iron Works is a family-owned metal fabrication shop right here in Marietta, and we build and fix iron and steel for homes and light commercial jobs across the area.

The name you give the job matters more than most people expect. A handrail and a guard railing are two different things, even though people use the words interchangeably. A custom bracket and a structural beam both start as steel stock, but only one of them carries a load. For fences and gates, see our iron fences & gates page. For porch, balcony, and interior railings, see ornamental ironwork.

So below, we’ve laid out what we do and where the lines fall between each one. Read the section that sounds like your project. Then click through if you want the deeper version.

Custom Metal Fabrication Covers Everything That Doesn't Have A Name Yet

Sometimes what you need isn’t a fence, a rail, or a gate. It’s a bracket nobody sells. A frame for an odd-sized opening. A mounting plate, a cover, a stand, a piece to replace something that broke and can’t be bought anymore. That’s custom metal fabrication, and it’s the umbrella over everything else in our shop.

The process is the part people underestimate. Store-bought iron is instant because somebody already designed and built it. Custom fabrication runs through design, measurement, cutting, welding, and finishing before it ever shows up at your place. That’s not slow, it’s just a different rhythm, and knowing that up front keeps expectations reasonable. Bring us a photo, a sketch on a napkin, or the broken original. Any of those work. What we need most is accurate measurements and a clear idea of what the piece has to do – hold weight, cover an opening, mount to brick, whatever it is.

Homeowners use this for one-off pieces. Contractors use it when a supplier can’t deliver something that fits. Both are welcome. If your project has a more specific name on this page, start there instead – it’ll get you a faster answer.

Structural Steel For Beams, Supports, And Load-Bearing Work

Structural steel is the load-bearing side of fabrication. Beams, columns, angle iron, lintels, support posts – the parts that hold weight instead of just enclosing a space. That’s what separates it from general custom metal fabrication, where the piece might be decorative or functional but isn’t carrying a structural load.

Most of these calls come from contractors and builders. Somebody’s opening up a wall, adding a second story, replacing a rotted wood post with steel, or needs a beam cut and drilled to spec. We fabricate and weld the components to the dimensions you give us.

Worth being clear about our lane here. We’re the fabrication and welding side. We build the steel. We’re not the engineer stamping the drawings and we’re not running the general construction. Bring us the spec or the plan, and we’ll build to it. For residential and light commercial jobs around Marietta, that usually means a short list: a beam or two, some connection plates, a few posts. Nothing exotic. Just cut clean, welded right, and drilled where the drawings say. Send dimensions and we’ll tell you what’s realistic.

Metal Handrails Are The Part You Grab

Here’s a distinction almost nobody gets right on the first call. A metal handrail is the graspable bar your hand wraps around going up or down stairs. A railing is the full barrier system – top rail, balusters, the whole guard. You can have one without the other, and codes often require the handrail specifically. So if somebody told you your stairs need “a rail,” it’s worth finding out which one they meant. A handrail mounted to a wall is a very different job from a freestanding guard railing set into concrete.

We build metal handrails for:

  • Interior stairs where the wall side has no grip
  • Exterior steps with just one or two risers
  • Basement and garage stairs
  • Entry stoops where mobility is the concern

Grip matters more than looks on a handrail. The diameter has to feel right in a hand, and the ends have to return to the wall so a sleeve or a bag doesn’t catch. Small details, but they’re the ones that get flagged. Cobb County and Marietta both have height and spacing rules that apply to new installs and to repairs, so we build to those either way. Metal Staircases Built For The Space You Have

Metal staircases is the broad term. It covers straight runs, L-shaped stairs with a landing, floating stairs with treads that look unsupported, and plain industrial stairs for a shop or a loading area. Spiral staircases are a specific sub-type, and people usually pick them for one reason – there isn’t floor space for anything else. If square footage is your problem, look at spiral staircases. Otherwise a metal staircase gives you more options. We build both interior and exterior stairs. Outdoor ones get the weather treatment, same as exterior railings. Indoor ones get the finish attention.

The measurements that drive a staircase design are pretty specific. Total rise floor to floor, the horizontal run you can give up, and the width of the opening at the top. Those three numbers decide most of it before we ever talk about looks.

Renovations are the most common trigger. Finishing a basement, adding a deck, converting an attic, replacing stairs that were never quite right. Stairs and interior railings usually get built as one project since they have to match.
